Mimic (A Spear Bearer Short) Page 4
blackness opened up from the Spear and Kracken’s face, her own face, opened wide in terror. And then, perhaps even more horrible, the face dissolved into a blur—the same erasure blur she’d seen on Uncle Mitali’s face when Jay had screamed that first night.
Lizzie turned her head and looked away. When she looked back Kracken was gone.
She wiped her tears on her sleeve. Then she went to the sitting room and cried some more.
“Kracken is hiding,” Masi said. “I can’t find that silly joke joker anywhere.”
“I hope he never comes back,” Jay said. “He gives me the creeps.”
“You shut your mouth Jay Jay,” Masi cried.
“Behave yourself little mama,” Uncle Mitali said, “Or we’re going to have to send you to your room.”
“It’s not nice,” Masi said, her lower lip protruding. “Kracken is my friend.”
Mr. Long caught Lizzie’s eye. She gave him a slight nod so he would know the job was done. Her dad smiled and winked at her.
“Do you know where he is?” Masi asked Lizzie.
Lizzie shook her head. She didn’t know where Kracken was. Banished is all she knew. Where to she couldn’t say. Maybe it was a good place. But the look of terror she had seen in Kracken’s eyes—her own eyes—made her think it might be otherwise.
Tears began to well up and she raised her napkin to her eyes.
“May I be excused?” she asked, her plate still full with bacon, eggs and toast. Without waiting for an answer she scooted her chair back from the table and ran from the room.
